There are several types of filters in a compressed air system but the two most common are coalescing and particulate. The coalescing filter’s job is to remove liquid water and other contaminants. It will give you the performance you require only when sized correctly for the application. If the filter is too big it may not work efficiently and if it is too small it may waste resources and not provide the contaminate removal you are expecting.

The primary job of the coalescing filter is to remove liquid from your system. A filter will not lower the dew point. Very fine filter elements are used in coalescing filtration typically down to 0.01 microns.  A micron is 0.00003937008 inches.  So it is critical that a larger filter be used up stream of the 0.01-micron filter to prolong its life and efficiency. Typically a 1.0-micron filter is used in this service but this again depends on your system.  There are so many choices in not only types but also in manufacturers designs that selecting the right filter for your application can be challenging.
