Atlas Copco Desiccant Air Dryers
Atlas Copco is an industry leader in designing and manufacturing all things related to compressed air technology. They offer an extensive catalog of compressed air system equipment, including compressors, filters, chillers and air dryers expertly engineered to remove moisture from compressed air for industrial applications.
Water vapor moisture is an unavoidable byproduct of the air compression process. While it may seem minimal, water vapors entrained in compressed air can negatively affect everything downstream, including pneumatic tools, final product quality and delicate processes.
Atlas Copco carries a comprehensive catalog of desiccant air dryers that work to dry your compressed air. Their range of dryers includes twin tower desiccant dryers and industrial rotary desiccant dryers.
Desiccant air dryers remove water vapor from compressed air by running it through beds of desiccant media that act as sponges to absorb the moisture. These systems simultaneously dry compressed air and regenerate saturated desiccants to provide an uninterrupted flow of dry compressed air.
AD BD CD Series Desiccant Dryers
AD BD CD series dryers feature twin tower desiccant beds that produce dry compressed air through absorption. These systems are energy-efficient and easy to use. The series offers various model sizes with capacities of 360 to 1,600 liters per second (l/s) and dew points as low as -40°C/-40°F to meet the needs of any application.
Each dryer in the series features unique patented technologies that maximize energy savings and improve durability. These systems feature IP 54 protected cubicles, galvanized piping with flanged connections, and all-in-one designs that ensure long service lives and a compact footprint.
This series of dryers is equipped with Atlas Copco’s Elektronikon® control and monitoring system. The onboard controller boasts an easy-to-use 3 1/2-inch high-definition screen, and it can be set to 32 different languages.
AD, BD, and CD dryers differ in how they regenerate saturated desiccant. For help determining which model will best suit your individual needs, chat with an expert at The Titus Company.
AD Heated Purge Desiccant Air Dryers
Atlas Copco AD series desiccant air dryers regenerate desiccants using a heated purge system. In this method of desiccant regeneration, a small amount of dry compressed air is heated and circulated through the saturated desiccant to remove the moisture.
AD series model dryers feature onboard low-watt density heaters installed inside specially designed insulated pipes for optimized efficiency. These heaters are made of stainless steel with nickel-plated pipes for corrosion protection and durability.
Heated purge desiccant dryers like the AD series offer high reliability and reduced energy costs.
BD Blower Purge Desiccant Air Dryers
Blower purge desiccant air dryers like the Atlas Copco BD series regenerate used desiccant by drawing in and heating up ambient air and circulating it through the saturated beads. This method doesn’t require any dry compressed purge air, so the system is able to produce 100% product air for your application.
BD desiccant dryers feature external blower systems to draw in ambient air. They also have onboard low-watt density heaters with stainless steel structures and nickel-plated pipes for added durability and protection against corrosion.
Atlas Copco BD series dryers provide the maximum amount of dry compressed air with high reliability and low energy consumption.
CD Heatless Desiccant Air Dryers
CD series heatless desiccant dryers regenerate saturated desiccant by circulating dry compressed air through the beads to resorb their moisture. This system is the most energy-efficient because no additional heaters or blowers are required.
The simplicity of the heatless regeneration system makes these dryers extraordinarily reliable and low-maintenance. Their butterfly switching valves with actuators provide high performance over a long life span, minimizing the chance of breakdowns and repairs.
Heatless desiccant dryers are ideal for applications with lower demands for dry compressed air because you don’t get 100% of the compressed air flow produced by your system. These dryers use a fraction of their product air for regeneration.
Industrial Applications
Twin tower desiccant dryers like those in the AD BD CD series are ideal for applications that require uninterrupted dry compressed airflow. These air dryers arrive ready for easy installation and require only minimal downtime for maintenance and repairs.
Common applications for AD BD CD series desiccant air dryers include:
- Mining.
- General industrial use.
- Manufacturing.
- Breweries.
- Pharmaceuticals.
Rotary Drum Absorption Dryers
Rotary drum desiccant dryers harness the heat naturally produced by the air compression process and put it to use regenerating saturated desiccants. Desiccants are embedded on the walls of a fiberglass drum, which is divided into drying and regeneration sectors. The drum slowly rotates as the system works to dry compressed air.
These systems use 5 to 10% of the amount of desiccant other absorption dryers use because the desiccants are embedded along the walls of the drum. There are no loose desiccant beads like those found in twin tower dryers. This feature also eliminates the need for post-filtration because the product air doesn’t contain desiccant dust like in some twin tower systems.
Atlas Copco’s line of industrial rotary dryers has a range of capacities from 200 to 4,000 l/s with ultra-low dew points. They operate with extremely low power consumption because their regeneration process doesn’t require much additional heat or dry compressed air.
The MD, ND and MGD series of dryers are monitored and controlled by Atlas Copco’s advanced Elektronikon system. This system features a 3 1/2-inch color display and connects via Ethernet for internet-based visualizations.
The industrial rotary dryers offered by Atlas Copco feature slight differences in operation to provide a wide range of capabilities.
MD Rotary Drum Dryers
MD series rotary drum dryers offer 200 to 4,400 l/s capacities with dew points down to -25°C/-13°F. These absorption dryers divide the stream of hot, wet compressed air as it enters the system from the compressor.
One portion of the air flows directly into the drying portion of the rotating drum for simple moisture removal and dry air production. The rest of the hot air is directed into the drum’s saturated desiccant portion, where the heat regenerates the desiccant before the air is cycled back into the initial inlet stream of hot air.
With MD rotary dryers, the only external energy required is 0.12 kW used to power the drum’s rotation.
ND Rotary Drum Dryers
ND dryers separate the incoming stream of hot, wet air into two. One portion flows through the drying portion of the rotary drum to produce dry compressed air, while the other portion passes through a regeneration heater that heats it up more before sending it through the saturated desiccant for regeneration.
Heating the already hot, wet compressed air allows you to achieve deeper, more precise dew points. The low-watt density heaters feature a stainless steel structure and nickel-plated heater pipes to prevent corrosion. They also have double thermostat protection for added safety measures.
ND series dryers offer 300 to 4,000 l/s capacities with dew points as low as -45°C/-49°F.
MDG Rotary Drum Absorption Dryers
Atlas Copco MGD series rotary dryers direct the full flow of incoming hot, wet compressed air through a heat exchanger and then through to a water-cooled chiller that drops its temperature. The full stream of air is then directed through the drying portion of the desiccant drum to create cool, dry compressed air.
A portion of the product air is then circulated back through the heat exchanger, where it’s heated by the hot, wet air. This heated dry air then flows through the saturated desiccant for regeneration before mixing back into the initial stream of cooled wet air.
Most of the MDG dryer’s components are constructed from stainless steel for corrosion resistance, reduced weight and overall improved endurance. These dryers maintain impressive performance with minimal required maintenance.
This system provides up to 450 l/s capacity with dew points of -40°C/F and lower.
Industrial Applications
Rotary drum desiccant dryers can be used with any compressed air system that uses oil-free screw or centrifugal compressors. These dryers provide exceptional efficiency with very little waste for industrial applications such as:
- Food and beverage processing.
- Power generation.
- Automotive manufacturing.
- Pharmaceuticals.
- Breweries.
- Pulp and paper production.
All Atlas Copco rotary drum dryers have received ISO 22000 certification for food and beverage production safety. Using our rotary dryers as part of your compressed air system makes it easier to receive your own ISO 22000 certification.
XD+ Series Heat of Compression Desiccant Dryers
XD+ series twin tower desiccant dryers operate by using the natural heat produced in the compression process to regenerate saturated desiccant media. Incoming hot air is divided and directed through each tower for simultaneous drying and regeneration, producing an uninterrupted flow of dry compressed air.
This process requires zero purge air and almost no energy from outside the system, producing the maximum amount of dry compressed air as efficiently as possible. For this reason, the XD+ air drying system is ideal for high-demand applications, constant use and use in critical processes.
Atlas Copco XD+ series dryers offer ultra-low internal pressure drops below 0.2 bar/2.9 psi to minimize energy consumption. They also have built-in water separators that reduce the desiccant load and extend the drying cycle for optimal performance.
XD+ dryers are controlled and monitored by Atlas Copco’s patented Elektronikon system. These controls feature a 3 1/2-inch high-definition color display with LED indicators and user-friendly operations available in 32 different languages. You can connect to your controller via Ethernet for internet-based monitoring and visualizations.
XD+ -G Model
XD+ -G model desiccant air dryers pair the heat of compression with an additional onboard heater to achieve constant pressure and greater control over the dew point. Regardless of ambient conditions, this system can achieve dew points of -40°C/-70°C or lower because the heater provides adjustments to the heat of the incoming air.
The stainless steel onboard heaters only generate heat when it’s required to reach a particular dew point, so your overall energy consumption remains limited for money-saving operational efficiency.
The XD+ -G heaters feature overheating protection and control from the Elektronikon monitoring system on each heater bundle for safety and optimized performance. These dryers are available in both single inlet and double inlet variations.
XD+ -S Model
-S model XD+ dryers rely solely on the heat of compression to regenerate desiccant beads. Since these dryers do not feature onboard heaters, their achievable dew points vary depending on ambient conditions. Generally, they are able to deliver dew points of -10°C to -20°C.
When combined with a high outlet temperature compressor, like an Atlas Copco ZR model, the XD+ -S dryer can reach dew points as low as -40°C.
XD+ -S model compressed air dryers are available in both single inlet and double inlet variations to meet any application’s needs.
Industrial Applications
XD+ series desiccant air dryers can be used as a part of any system with oil-free air compressors. These dryers consume only small amounts of energy to produce a large amount of dry compressed air, making them ideal for applications with large demands or critical processes.
Common applications for XD+ heat of compression desiccant dryers include:
- Medical and health services.
- Food and beverage processing.
- Pulp and paper production.
- Pharmaceuticals.
Atlas Copco XD+ series compressed air dryers have received ISO 22000 certification for food and beverage production safety. When you use these dryers as part of your compressed air system, it makes it easier to receive your own ISO 22000 certification for your production facility.
